The first exposure I had to records was my parents limited collection, containing at best twelve vinyls. Like every child I was told not to touch them because I might break or scratch them, and like every child that only caused me to do the opposite.
House Party had to be the first time I saw a dj. It was Martin Lawrence’s character Bilal that got me. The funny thing about it was that it wasn’t a glamorous depiction of the dj, his character was the butt of jokes. I still remember one of his lines from the movie that stands true still today twenty years later, “Don’t bump the table, I’m trying to mix!” The one scene that really portrayed djs was when Bilal pulled a white label record and said, “So niggas can’t bite your shit.”
Being the party conductor, playing the music that I wanted to hear and still having the crowd say “ohhhh” like it was their favorite track also. That’s why I wanted to become a dj.
